Pregnancy & Postpartum Kinesiology

Disclaimer: Please obtain clearance from your obstetrician, family physician, or midwife prior to commencing any physical activity program during pregnancy or postpartum recovery.

What is Kinesiology?

As defined by the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK), Kinesiology is the clinical science of human movement. A maternal kinesiologist applies evidence-based research to design custom exercise plans, manage joint alignment, evaluate physical transfers, and guide you safely through prenatal and postpartum rehabilitation.

Target Heart Rate Zone

General Guidance

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week and using the “talk test” (you should be able to hold a conversation) to gauge effort. As a rough guide only, a heart-rate zone of about 60% to 80%of an estimated maximum is sometimes used. Use the slider below to explore an estimate for your age, always follow your provider’s advice:

Prenatal & Postpartum Exercise Benefits

Exercise During Pregnancy

  • Pain Reduction: Alleviates pelvic girdle pain, lower back discomfort, and sciatic symptoms.
  • May Support Labor: According to ACOG, staying active during pregnancy may be associated with shorter active labour and fewer cesarean births for some people. Individual outcomes vary.
  • Core Protection: Pelvic floor activation protects the bladder and reduces incontinence risks.

Postpartum Strength Rebuilding (2-6 Weeks Post-Birth)

Purposeful, low-impact maternal movements can often be reintroduced gradually in the weeks following delivery, once you have been cleared by your provider. Timing varies with your delivery type and recovery:

  • Rebuild core stability by rehabilitating diastasis recti and abdominal wall pressure control.
  • Accelerate safe return to impact activities, running, and heavy exercises.
  • Support mental health through gentle cardiovascular activity and pelvic recovery.
